a million pounds

Holy crap, folks… I checked out the Richard Serra exhibit at the MoMA on Thursday during a member preview & was pretty blown away. There are so many cool things to say about it… The room where his new works are displayed was built for his works in mind when the renovated the museum a couple years back. Why would you need to build a special room for his pieces? Because they weigh, all together, 1,000,000 pounds. When was the last time you were in a room with 1,000,000 pounds? They are beautiful pieces & do not betray themselves to be immensely heavy… they actually appear more fluid than anything. But there’s something in the room that you can feel. You feel the heft even though you can’t see or feel it. The best part, I suppose, is that they are new. New to us, new to art and new to experience. I am especially thankful for my MoMA membership when I can catch these shows early & when there aren’t many people. I felt like I was in my backyard with my personal sculptures.
